5 BlackBerry Travel Tips

1. Protect Your BlackBerry - There are literally hundreds of choices on how you can keep your BlackBerry looking its best while you pack it around with you. My personal favorite is the invisibleSHIELD. It was painless to install and is standing up well against some heavy abuse. I wanted to test the scratch proofing on my Pearl. After digging into the back with a key for a minute, there were noticable impressions, but no scratches. After a few minutes the impressions disappeared and the invisbleSHIELD looked like new.

2. Install Gmail Mobile - Almost all of my email runs through Gmail or Google Apps. It’s easy to access any of these accounts using Gmail Mobile. The interface is similar to the standard Gmail interface and is easy to use. Most likely, you’ll save a few bucks doing this by not having to subscribe to BlackBerry Enterprise plans.

3. Make Sure You Have the Software You Need - Whether you need maps, games, or the ability to ssh (yes, I’m a nerd), you want to make sure you have the right software before you go. BlackBerry Geeks is actively adding BlackBerry software reviews and tips for getting the most out of the programs that go on your BlackBerry. CrackBerry.com and BerryReview.com also offer some good info on BlackBerry software.

4. Backup Your Data - You never know if/when you might lose your phone while you’re traveling. Make sure you back up all of your data prior to leaving on a trip. This will ensure that you aren’t completely screwed if you end up without your phone.

5. Don’t Forget Your Charger - This one is pretty obvious, but I have left my charger at home and it sucked to be without it. There are many BlackBerry chargers available, including chargers for international travel. Even if you’re only going on an overnight trip, make sure to bring it. You never know when you’ll need to be checking email or other activities that burn through your battery life.
