How-To Protect Your Data

Business travelers and their laptops are inseparable. And you know what that combination means? W.O.R.K.

But with the threat of Murphy’s Law (which, believe me, is not an urban myth!), you need to make sure that the time you have spent burning the midnight oil will not disappear.

Should Murphy’s Law prevail (read: something happens to your laptop like… your battery explodes, TSA decides to confiscate it, you accidentally pour coffee on it, etc.), you will not be going to that important presentation empty-handed.

What can you do? Make back-up copies. Plural.

It is very important to regularly back up the files you have on the hard drive of your laptop.

  • Set up a web-based email which you can access from any computer. You can then e-mail a copy of your work to yourself.
  • Save it on an external drive… like a handy USB drive.
  • Send a copy to a trusted colleague who is back in the office in case you need someone to send you a printed copy.

Capisce?!

Backing up is absolutely a must! I use a program called Handy Backup from handybackup.com that can zip (and password protect) then upload to FTP, sync files across networks, create time-stamped version, and allows full or incremental backups. For the $30 it cost, it’s been a lifesaver!

I also use my iPod as my portable USB drive since I can’t fill up 60gb worth of songs and this way I don’t have to travel with yet another device.

I wonder though, will TSA start confiscating iPods because they can be used as data storage in the ever-increasing “security” restrictions they come up with?
