The post-iPhone craze

The Apple iPhone has been out less than a week, and people seem to be indulging in the crazyness that typically happens when something so hyped is released onto the market. If you can’t get one, you can find them on Ebay for around $700.

Deemed by some to be the most popular electronic device since the iPod, Apple has seemed to yet again hit another marketing jackpot. While the phone isn’t considered relatively inexpensive, ($600 is still considered expensive, right?) the phone is definately eye-catching. Worth the 6 day wait, as one man in New York endured to be the first in line to purchase one? That’s an answer that we will see in the upcoming months. Currently, the iPhone is only available to AT&T/Cingular customers, and requires the purchase or addition of the data plan to your monthly bill. At typically $20 a month extra, the cost of owning the iPhone alone will run you back around $240 extra a year, aside from the initial cost.

The other complaint that is beginning to surface is that Apple has included the same DRM software that the iPod has. DRM stands for Digital Rights Management, which basically translates into the following: Unless you purchase the songs via the Apple Store, or have them on your iPod, you cannot put them onto your iPhone. Apple, supposedly with pressure from the record labels, has attempted to stunt the spread of music sharing and illegal downloading by incorporating this same feature into all their devices. While it doesn’t necessarily deter the music sharing, it actually does become cumbersome, and fairly annoying.

Not to knock Apple though, once again they have demonstrated that their maketing minds run at least three times as fast as ours, and continue to produce popular and sought after products that Microsoft, and other competition can only lust after. In the coming months, expect the usual hype surrounding the emergence of the iPhone, and take careful note how how Apple choses to deal with the complaints that will most positively occur.
