RFID Wallet
By Aleksi | Permalink |What is RFID anyway? It stands for radio frequency identification, and basically refers to things such as no-swipe credit cards, passcards for locked security doors, as well as other things that send a small signal to a reader to gain access into your indentification. With this new technology, there is also the risk of a new type of thief. Gone are the days of needing to actually remove the items from your person, in fact, “RFID hackers” as they’re called, can actually steal vital information from your wallet while only brushing against, or near your body.
While credit card companies insist there have been measures taken to ensure that your information is encrypted and protected from such dangers, however some researchers have shown otherwise.
The RFID Wallet is the creation of designer Theo Stewart-Stand. Made out of steel that is used primarily for aerospace applications, the weave has been laced into fabric, making the wallet extremely flexible, just like a leather or suede, but without discoloring, wearing out, and much stronger. While you may think that the wallet of steel would be rough to the touch, Stewart/Stand insist that is remains silky-smooth in texture, and will also remain at a lower temperature. The major attraction of this wallet is however, the capability of protecting your information. If you have cards that contain information, such as a no-swife credit card, or access cards, you are at risk of your information being stolen. With the steel RFID Wallet, this becomes impossible. The steel in the wallet disrupts the frequencies being trasmitted by your cards, and therefore, when a potential hacker attempts to gain access, they simple cannot bypass the metal.
At anywhere from $80-$125, your wallet might be a little thinner because of all the cash you had to fork out to get one, but for those of you that appreciate a nice quality wallet, and wouldn’t mind having a conversation starter, perhaps this would be the one for you.
You can check out the full line of wallets from the Stewart/Stand website.
