Pack Your Laptop with Airport Security Checks in Mind

I just returned from a 2-week Europe/Asia trip
/end of excuse for sporadic postings

All of my flights were uneventful but the security check (particularly in Frankfurt’s Terminal 2) was a nightmare. I do not blame the guys at the airport who were just doing their job. I blame the terrorists but that deserves a different post.

Anyway… should you be traveling with your laptop soon, you may want to make it easier for the security guys (which equals to faster clearance for you) by:

  • Making sure your laptop is placed in easily accessible compartment, should you pack it together with the rest of your carry-ons.
  • Making sure you have enough battery power, should you be asked to turn your laptop on.
  • Putting your laptop on “suspend” mode to start it up faster.

Of course, you also need to make sure that your laptop is secure and safe.

  • If you have sensitive information in your laptop, protect it against loss by storing it separately — in a flash drive, CD-ROM.
  • Keep the laptop within your sight.

Note that x-ray machines will not cause damage to your laptop. However, metal detectors may cause problems. Inform the security official assigned to you, should you see him getting ready to wave his metal detector.
