Noise-canceling Headphones

Made popular by Bose, noise-canceling headphones have been on the market for a number of years, and over time, newer models have been introduced to the market. What exactly are noise-canceling headphones? Simple. When you listen to your MP3 player on an airplane, unless you have the volume cranked until your ears are about to explode, you can always hear the background noises. These headphones are equipped with microphones that monitor the surrounding noises, and then omit a frequency that is “opposite” of what you would normally hear. What this means in simple terms is that essentially, the noise is subtracted from the equation of your music, and you don’t hear it anymore.

It’s hard to know which are the best, and because most of these headphones can run in the $200+ range, you obviously want to do your homework before purchasing a pair. There’s a great write-up in the NY Times about a number of the leading headphones.
