Facebook goes public

Not really travel related, but still a concern for technology lovers alike, Facebook, the creation of Mark Zuckerberg, has opted to go public via a search function that allows people who are NOT members of the site, to search for people by a specific name. While still not as dangerous as the Myspace option to “browse,” it still offers concerns for privacy advocates all around.

Some feel that this ability will transform the social network into more of an “internet white pages,” allowing people to search for member names even via search engines like Google.

Facebook insists that the information being given out is minimal at the most, and users have the option to make their profiles private to those searching. Also, to be able to contact the person whose profile you may be looking at, you must be a member of the site.

Others fear that making the information on the website more mainsteam allows malicious use, claiming that publicizing a date of birth is a problem because this has typically been used as a way of identifying bank customers. Time will tell what will become of this, let’s hope it doesn’t take the same path as it’s relatives.
